IRVING, Texas - The Cowboys have again reached out to former defensive tackle Josh Brent. This time, it's in the scouting department.
Brent, who has retired from football twice, most recently in May, is back at Valley Ranch working with the scouts, Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones said.
"It's good to have him out here," Jones said. "We want him here."
Brent will work in the department run by Will McClay, the senior director of college/pro personnel. McClay said it's too early to define a specific role for Brent, only that he will be working "his way into the department."
The former defensive tackle spent five months in jail after being convicted of intoxication manslaughter for the death of former Cowboys teammate Jerry Brown in 2012. Brent retired from football in 2013 but returned in 2014 after serving a 10-game suspension by the NFL for violating the personal conduct policy.
Brent played one game last year despite being on the 53-man roster for the final month of the season. A 2010 supplemental draft pick, Brent played 39 games from 2010-12 including five starts in 2012.
