FRISCO, Texas – All year, the Cowboys' plan has been to develop the young talent on their defensive line, and that certainly worked well in Week 6.
The NFL announced Wednesday that David Irving has been named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week after his electric performance in the Cowboys' 30-16 win against Green Bay.
Irving was the highlight of the Cowboys' pass rush, as he sacked Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and forced three fumbles on the day – one of which he recovered on the Cowboys' goal line. The second-year defensive lineman also posted four tackles and batted down a pass during the game.
"He's a young player who's learning how to play consistently down in and down out with the intensity he needs to play with, with the discipline that he needs to play with," said Cowboys coach Jason Garrett on Monday. "But there's no question he showed what he's capable of doing yesterday."
Perhaps the most amazing thing about Irving's game was that he did it on just 19 snaps as a member of the Cowboys' pass rush rotation.
It will be interesting to see if the award-worthy performance earns the young pass rusher any more snaps going forward.
