PITTSBURGH – The Cowboys are riding the "hot hand" of rookie quarterback Dak Prescott, and after Sunday's 35-30 comeback win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, Jerry Jones emphasized that Tony Romo is just fine with that.
In his ninth straight start since Romo injured his back near the end of preseason, Prescott completed 22 of 32 passes for 319 yards and two touchdowns and directed the winning five-play, 75-yard scoring drive in the final minute.
The Cowboys (8-1) have won eight straight games with Prescott under center and own the best record in the NFC.
Romo has continued to increase his practice participation over the last three weeks but was not active against the Steelers. Asked if he expected Romo to be active as a backup next Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens, Jones said, "I do. He's ready."
Does the Cowboys' owner/general manager think that will be an awkward situation for Romo?
[embeddedad0]"No. I do not at all," Jones said. "And I don't think it will be awkward for anyone at all. I'm just glad to have him out there, want him out there if in case he's needed, ready to roll."
Romo entered training camp as the expected starter for a 10th straight season, but a fracture in his back has sidelined him since Aug. 25. The injury has since healed and he has returned to practice, working with the scout team with Prescott taking the first-team reps.
Romo was all smiles after Sunday's win, and Jones reiterated that the veteran quarterback is "genuinely excited" about the team's winning streak.
"Consequently there's nobody happier for our success because it's his success," Jones said. "Good things will happen for him."
Jones has said repeatedly in recent weeks that the Cowboys' roster doesn't have a fragile mentality and can handle what has become an ideal quarterback situation: a rookie playing outstanding football while the proven veteran gets healthy.
That means Romo's on board, too.
"Absolutely," Jones said. "Let me be real clear about that. There's no equivocation. He's totally and completely committed to doing the very best thing to win the game."
