Cowboys Re-Sign Kellen Moore; Backup QB Roles For Week 1 Still Unsettled

FRISCO, Texas – Three days after he was released at final cuts, the Cowboys re-signed backup quarterback Kellen Moore to the active roster.

The team placed tight end Rico Gathers on the Reserve/Injured list on Monday, opening a spot for Moore.

The Cowboys now have two quarterbacks behind starter Dak Prescott, but head coach Jason Garrett on Monday did not confirm rookie Cooper Rush would open the season in the No. 2 role.

"We'll work that out as the week goes on," Garrett said.

Rush, undrafted out of Central Michigan, had the highest passer rating of any NFL quarterback in preseason (135.9).

Moore opened training camp firmly as the No. 2 quarterback but began splitting second-team reps with Rush late in camp. In four games, he completed 32 of 59 passes (54.2 percent) for 392 yards with one touchdown and one interception (73.6 rating). He also lost a fumble that was returned for a touchdown.
