Xavier Woods' Status Uncertain With Ankle Injury

FRISCO, Texas – Starting safety Xavier Woods suffered a high ankle sprain against Washington this past Sunday and his status for Week 3 against the Dolphins is uncertain at this point.

Speaking Tuesday on 105.3 The Fan, Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones refuted reports that Woods would definitively miss several weeks with the injury.

"We'll evaluate it as the week goes along," Jones said. "The fact that it's in doubt (for Sunday) is serious, I guess. But he's young. He might be able to move pretty good on it at that position. Some positions have a tougher time. They've got to push off harder every play."

Woods emerged as a viable starter at free safety last season and nearly intercepted Redskins quarterback Case Keenum in last Sunday's 31-21 road victory.

Backup safety Darian Thompson returned from an ankle injury in Week 2 and could be in line for more snaps if Woods were to miss time. Kavon Frazier and rookie Donovan Wilson, the sixth-round pick who was inactive the first two games, would be options, too.
