The depth at the receiver position was put to the test during the Cowboys' practice with the Chargers Thursday morning at Valley Ranch.
Wide receiver Miles Austin was held out with a minor hamstring injury. Coach Jason Garrett said he doesn't think Austin's injury is serious but wouldn't say if he would be available to play Sunday night against San Diego.
"We're just going to take it day by day with him," Garrett said. "That seems to be a theme for us with a number of starting and veteran players being out for different reasons. It's fun for us coaches to see how the young players respond.
Austin's absence forced Kevin Ogletree onto the first-team with backup Jesse Holley working as the No. 3 receiver. Garrett admitted that Holley's play on offense needs to improve from being a one-dimensional special teams player and noted this injury has given him a chance to practice with the first unit.
One of the quarterbacks throwing balls to the receivers was backup Jon Kitna, who had missed two days of practice with a lower back strain. But with the day off on Wednesday, the veteran was back on the field with the No. 2 offense.
