ARLINGTON, Texas – Rookie cornerback Anthony Brown ended preseason Thursday night like he began training camp in the first padded practice: with an interception.
This time, he returned it for a touchdown – the first pick-six of his entire football career, at any level.
"First one," Brown said. "I didn't even know what to do when I got in the end zone, but it felt great. Many more to come, hopefully."
Brown's 59-yard touchdown return against the Texans put an exclamation point on a productive training camp and preseason, making the sixth-round pick a strong candidate to be the fourth cornerback on the depth chart after veterans Orlando Scandrick, Brandon Carr and Mo Claiborne.
Brown's attention to detail was on display on the interception. He said he'd noticed the Texans running the same play twice previously. The third time he read Houston quarterback Brandon Weeden's eyes, jumped the route and took the ball away.
"He's really done a good job," Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said. "I think he's really grown particularly here in the last three weeks. It just seemed like he's playing with more confidence both as a run defender and making plays in the passing game both in practice and in the game. It really was a great play by him stepping up in front of that thing and making what's not always an easy catch. He caught it clean and took it the other way."
