Caelen Carson, Carl Lawson among Cowboys' jersey number changes for 2024

FRISCO, TX — It's officially Week 1 for the 2024 NFL season and that not only means the Dallas Cowboys are beginning to finalize their preparation for the Cleveland Browns, but also that the team's roster is mostly final and jersey numbers have been assigned to all 53 players as well as the 17 guys on the practice squad.

The headline change comes by way of cornerback Caelen Carson, the rookie fifth-round pick taking on the famed No. 21.

It's no secret the number was made legendary by Hall of Fame defensive back Deion Sanders, and was recently worn by former two-time NFL rushing champ Ezekiel Elliott and, in 2023, the former NFL Defensive Player of the Year, Stephon Gilmore.

Carson isn't the only one wearing a memorable number, as safety Emany Johnson can attest, wearing Tony Dorsett's former number that was also donned by linebacker Damone Clark prior to the latter changing his number to 18.

Carl Lawson will put on the No. 55, once owned by Leighton Vander Esch, the former Pro Bowl linebacker medically retiring from football this offseason.

There are a total of 10 number changes to begin the Cowboys' season and, with that now in the rearview, Cleveland and the Browns await their arrival on Sept. 8.
