IRVING, Texas --After a defensive-minded draft that featured five defensive players out of seven total picks, the Cowboys agreed to terms with 21 rookie free agents, 14 of whom play on offense.
More than 40 players are expected to participate in this weekend's minicamp running Friday through Sunday. It will include the Cowboys' seven draft picks, 21 free agents and a few rookie tryouts to help supplement the practices -- likely including a pair of quarterbacks. Some first-year veterans will also be eligible to practice.
The most notable signing is Memphis guard Ronald Leary, who made a pre-draft visit to Valley Ranch and might have been a mid-round pick if not for an apparent knee condition. Executive vice president Stephen Jones said the Cowboys would have considered taking Leary in the sixth round. He's one of six offensive linemen in the group.
Beasley (SMU), Dunbar (North Texas), Hamilton (Prairie View A&M), Kemp (UTEP) and Madison (Arkansas) were invited to the local Dallas Day workout in early April.
The rookies will report to Valley Ranch on Thursday, and four practices (two each day) are open to the media on Friday and Saturday. The entire minicamp is closed to the public.
