defense in the final five minutes of games, like the Ravens did to the Cowboys on Saturday night.
Weird stuff has been happening to this team all season long.
Maybe they didn't meet the lofty expectations that were placed on this team. Maybe they didn't meet their own expectations.
But Phillips was quick to point out that other teams are in the same boat, some even worse.
"Well I believe Green Bay was 13-3 last year," Phillips said of the Packers, who went into Monday night's game with a 5-9 record. "There're no guarantees in this league. There's no guarantee you're going to be exactly - even if it's the same football team - where you're going to be. Seattle (4-11) was up there and been in the playoffs for four, five years in a row and won the division. They didn't win anything. They didn't win it. There're no guarantees in this league and it can be up and down. You've got to fight hard to get there and that's what we're trying to do."
All the Cowboys could ask for is a chance.
They have it now with one game to play. Win and move on. Lose and go home.
It can't be any clearer than that.
