IRVING, Texas – The Cowboys signed five more players to their practice squad Tuesday, including running back Gus Johnson, the team's preseason rushing leader with 37 carries for 139 yards and two touchdowns.
Their four other signings – wide receiver Vince Mayle, wide receiver Rodney Smith, linebacker Joe Thomas and quarterback Kellen Moore – came from other training camps.
Mayle (6-3, 240) was drafted by the Browns in the fourth round in May and released by Cleveland at final cuts. In two seasons at Washington State, he caught 148 passes for 2,022 yards and 16 touchdowns, including a school-record 106 catches for 1,483 yards last year.
Smith, also waived by Cleveland in preseason, has appeared in eight career games with no catches since going undrafted out of Florida State in 2013.
Undrafted in 2014, Thomas competed for a roster spot with the Packers in last year's training camp and ultimately spent eight games on Green Bay's practice squad.
Moore, who went undrafted in 2012, worked under Cowboys offensive coordinator Scott Linehan in Detroit when Linehan held the same title from 2012-13. This preseason he was 29-of-47 for 254 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
The Cowboys now have one spot open on the 10-man practice squad. Quarterback Jameill Showers, linebacker Dakorey Johnson, safety Tim Scott and offensive tackle John Wetzel signed Monday.
