OXNARD, Calif. — The Dallas Cowboys have signed offensive tackle Cohl Cabral after a workout on Wednesday morning. As a corresponding roster move, the Cowboys waived/injured defensive end Shaka Toney after he suffered a groin injury earlier in the week. Toney's stint with Dallas lasted just 13 days.
The signing of Cabral comes on the heels of a significant toe injury to offensive tackle Chuma Edoga that is expected to sideline him well into the regular season. In addition, second-year offensive tackle Earl Bostick Jr. was helped off the field on Wednesday after suffering a lower right leg injury.
The depth at tackle is now highlighted after a pair of injuries to the group behind rookie Tyler Guyton and Terence Steele. The healthy bodies now only include Matt Waletzko, Asim Richards and Josh Ball. Ball came in at left tackle with the second-team unit after Bostick's injury, the first time he had taken team reps at the position in camp with most of his work coming on the right side. Rookie Nathan Thomas is also a depth option, but he has been sidelined with injury for over a week.
Cabral now arrives at camp with a big opportunity to show reliable depth behind the starting unit. Cabral's experience includes being signed as an undrafted free agent by the Los Angeles Rams in 2019 and stints with the Houston Texans and under Mike Zimmer with the Minnesota Vikings. He played in the spring in the United Football League with the Birmingham Stallions.
The Cowboys also worked out offensive tackle Dru Samia, a former fourth-round pick by the Minnesota Vikings in 2019 under Mike Zimmer. He played in 15 games over two seasons for the Vikings before being waived/injured going into his third season. After a practice squad stint with the New York Jets, he played in the UFL for the Arlington Renegades.
