OXNARD, Calif. - The Dallas Cowboys are finalizing a trade to send cornerback Nahshon Wright to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for cornerback Andrew Booth.
The move comes just two days before the start of the preseason, as both Wright and Booth get a fresh start in a defensive system that may benefit each a little more.
Booth, a second-round pick of the Vikings in 2022, has played in 23 games including all 17 last year. He has just two career starts and no interceptions.
Wright has been a starter in practice here in Oxnard with Trevon Diggs still rehabbing from last year's ACL injury. Diggs is expected to be ready for the season opener in Cleveland. With increased opportunities, rookie Caelen Carson has been impressive with his reps in his first training camp with the team. Behind other starters DaRon Bland and slot corner Jourdan Lewis, cornerbacks on the roster include Eric Scott Jr., Josh Butler, Josh DeBerry and Kemon Hall.
A third-round pick (No. 99 overall) of the Cowboys in 2021, Wright has played in 32 games with just three starts. In 2022, he played in only seven games due to injury but returned later in the season and recorded his only career interception in a win over the Titans.
Wright has been more of a special teams contributor in his time with the Cowboys, including a touchdown in 2021 when he recovered a blocked punt against the Falcons. His presence as a 6-foot-4 cornerback created an anomaly for the Cowboys at the position, which former defensive coordinator Dan Quinn cherished in his system. On the flip side, the Vikings -- who are still dealing with the aftermath of the horrible tragedy to rookie cornerback Khyree Jackson (6-foot-4, 195 pounds) -- get much-needed length on the boundary for what their defense is trying to accomplish.
