FRISCO, Texas - After his first round of the Reliant Home Run Derby Wednesday night, Dak Prescott walked out of the batting cage towards a huddle of media members that were eager to chat with the Cowboys quarterback.
A little frustrated by only hitting two home runs in that round, the ever-confident Prescott told the reporters that he would bounce back, stating "the best is yet to come."
Now Prescott was simply referring to another round in the derby. But coincidentally, that is exactly what the Cowboys are hoping for with Prescott, who is expected to sign a new contract at some point, perhaps as early as this offseason, to become one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in NFL history.
But when asked if he's feeling any pressure to get a deal done sooner than later, Prescott shrugged it off with ease.
"I want to be a Cowboy forever," Prescott said. "I think the people that are doing the deal feel the same way so to me it's no rush. I know it will get done."
Prescott said he's not spending any time worrying about getting a new deal. And despite it being mid-May, his attention is centered on the same place it is all year long.
"My whole focus is within the locker room," Prescott said. "I've got people that take care of that. I've got a great team, team of agents. That's their job. Jerry has said when he's had to that they are negotiating but as far as I'm concerned, it's just about getting better, getting better as quarterback, getting better as a leader and just making sure our team is getting better."
Last month, Seattle's Russell Wilson became the highest-paid player in NFL history with a four-year, $140 million contract extension that will pay him about $35 million per season.
Whether or not Prescott gets anywhere close to that contract, he knows the money that is likely headed his way is more than he could've ever imagined.
"It's all generational money and life-changing money. It's a blessing just to be in this position. But as far as the numbers are concerned, my focus is within the locker room. I know it'll get taken care of so it is what it is."
And while the Cowboys' PR staff was trying to move the interview along so he can get back to the dugout for his next round, Dak added one more quote for good measure.
"I want to be a Cowboy, I'm sure pretty sure I'll be a Cowboy for a long time," he said. "I don't have any worry or anxiety of it not happening or trying to get it done sooner than later. No worries. It'll get done."
