OXNARD, Calif. — It's been a little over three weeks since the Dallas Cowboys arrived in Southern California, and while contract extension negotiations with Dak Prescott have been a high order, the situation around CeeDee Lamb has grabbed the bigger headlines.
As a result, Dak Prescott was able to update the media on Thursday with the latest on his negotiations for the first time since earlier this month. In the time since, Prescott's representation and the Cowboys front office have come together on an exchange of deals, even if Prescott has largely remained out of the back-and-forth.
"I have somebody that takes care of that," Prescott said. "I haven't put too much thought into if it gets done now, if it gets done in a couple weeks, during the season, whenever it happens. I just know conversations are going the right way."
According to league projections, Prescott is expected to set the market at the quarterback position with an average annual salary of at least $60 million. He will enter the final season of his contract in 2024 with a no-trade clause and no-franchise tag clause for 2025 and beyond.
"Good conversations are going on, I will say that," he said. "Call it negotiations, conversations, a lot of good things are going there. A lot of confidence there. As I've said any time I've talked about it, I have a lot of confidence in my [representation] and [the Cowboys] in getting something done."
While he does stay out of the day-to-day talks around his negotiation, he did say that his representation will update him. "Depends on how good it is," he said with a smile.
Prescott is entering his ninth season as the starting quarterback for the Cowboys, as he sits on the verge of knocking down franchise history. With 4,724 yards and 46 touchdowns, he will reach Tony Romo's club records that once seemed insurmountable for the young fourth-round pick in 2016.
Amid the confidence in getting a deal done, Prescott also emphasizes that it is a business at the end of the day. For that record book to be re-written in No. 4's lettering, it could take time. But for Prescott, all he is worried about is the now.
"If it happens, it happens," he said. "To be honest, it's the business…I'm really happy where I am right now and that's where my focus is. I enjoy being a Cowboy, a thousand-percent. I enjoy living in Dallas. I enjoy everything about it, but this is a business. Conversations are going well, but I'm thankful to be where I am right now."
