Dez Bryant Not Expected To Miss Offseason Program Following Surgery

IRVING, Texas – Dez Bryant has yet to have surgery on his injured foot, but the procedure isn't expected to hinder him in the offseason.

Among a litany of end-of-season topics, Cowboys owner/general Jerry Jones was asked about Bryant's prospects in the coming weeks. While the All-Pro receiver has yet to undergo surgery, it doesn't sound like he will be down for long.

"What I am told is that he shouldn't miss any of our organized offseason work and certainly not training camp," Jones said.

That's at least an inkling of good news after the Cowboys concluded a 4-12 campaign on Sunday. Bryant hasn't been at full health in roughly six months, so the thought of him operating at 100 percent during the offseason is a good one.

Bryant's injury history has been long and well-documented since he held out of the 2015 offseason during a contract dispute. He strained his hamstring early on in training camp and was limited up until the start of the regular season. Three quarters into the year, he broke the fifth metatarsal in his right foot and was forced out for six weeks.

Shortly after he returned from that injury, Bryant hurt his knee and ankle while catching a contested touchdown on Nov. 8 against Philadelphia. Those problems hampered him throughout the next month until he was ultimately placed on injured reserve this past week.

That laundry list of problems is exhausting when spelled out in full detail, but Jones said he does not have any long-term concerns about Bryant's health moving forward.

"Health-wise I do not, no," he said. "We're talking about something here that we don't know, but no one has given me any indication at any level of our medical stuff or just in general from outside our medical staff, that he's got an issue that would limit him going into our normal training regime – going into training camp, going into the season next year."

If the Cowboys are to bounce back from their disappointing 2015 campaign, Bryant will be looked at to return to his dominant form from the preceding three seasons. During that stretch, he amassed a staggering 273 receptions for 3,935 total yards and 41 combined touchdowns.

In nine appearances this year, he caught 31 balls for 401 yards and three touchdowns.
