ARLINGTON, Texas –The preseason is at its end, which means the Cowboys' 2013 draft class is on the verge of the regular season.
As anyone might expect from the ugly nature of Thursday's 24-6 loss to Houston, it was a bit of a mixed bag for everyone – draft picks included.
Here's a quick look at how the rookies fared in the last preseason outing of the year:
Joseph Randle, RB:Randle didn't exactly light the world on fire, but his 10 carries for 47 yards was one of just a few bright spots for the Cowboys' offense. Randle got significant playing time in all five preseason games, as he easily led the team in rushing with 55 carries for 215 yards. That's an average of 3.9 yards per carry – not great, not awful.
J.J. Wilcox, S:Wilcox led not just the Cowboys, but the entire game in tackles, as he posted seven stops on the night. Most of those plays came well down the field, as the Dallas reserves gave up 427 total yards to Houston. But Wilcox continued to show his knack for being around the ball.
Gavin Escobar, TE:One foot kept a decent night from being a great night for Escobar. He finished with five receptions for 29 yards, and most of those were checkdowns to the flat by quarterback Alex Tanney. However, in the second quarter, Tanney scrambled and floated a prayer to Escobar in the back of the end zone. Escobar made a nice reception and got one foot down, but he didn't get the two feet required for a touchdown.
B.W. Webb, CB:A decent night for Webb, who saw plenty of playing time as a starting corner with the starters sitting out. Webb recorded four combined tackles playing primarily on the outside of the formation, and he defensed two passes. He was beaten a handful of times by Houston receivers, but nothing egregious.
DeVonte Holloman, LB:Maybe the most unremarkable night of Holloman's preseason, but that's mainly because he has had such a fantastic preseason. He recorded two tackles but didn't have any impactful plays that measured up to his big moments earlier in the preseason. [embedded_ad]
Terrance Williams, WR:Williams started at receiver alongside Harris, but he was not long for the field. He played the first possession with starting quarterback Kyle Orton, but he was quickly pulled in favor of some of the Cowboys' bubble receivers. He wasn't targeted and didn't record any catches.
Travis Frederick, C:The first-rounder said Wednesday he was expecting to play at least a little bit in this game, but the coaching staff disagreed. Frederick appears to be set as the Cowboys' Week 1 starter at center, and he sat out the entire Texans game.
