FRISCO, Texas – The Cowboys' 2017 preseason is nearly complete.

The team held its last of six scheduled training camp practices Tuesday inside Ford Center at the Star in Frisco, culminating five weeks of workouts split between the franchise's new world headquarters and their annual training base in Oxnard, Calif.

The Cowboys' open practices at Ford Center were the first camp practices ever held by the team in the North Texas area.

"It's been great," head coach Jason Garrett said. "Training camp has been really, really good, the environments that we practice in in Oxnard. Even when we practiced in Cleveland at Case Western Reserve (prior to the Hall of Fame Game) and then back here at The Star. It's been outstanding. And our players and coaches have responded really well to it.

"We have an unbelievable facility. And for us to be able to go in there and practice and practice in front of our fans in such a spirited environment, it certainly helps our team a great deal and I think our team has responded the right way."

The work continues, though.

Just days from now, the Cowboys must trim their 90-man roster to 53 players.

For guys on the bubble, it's the last chance to make an impression on the coaching staff and front office.

"Obviously the game the other night (against the Raiders) was the game where our starters played the most. To me, that was the best game to evaluate where the first-team guys are," Garrett said. "I thought we did some good things in the game, and obviously there's plenty for us to improve on in all three areas of our team.

"I think our guys are working hard. I think they understand the opportunity we have. These next few days are important for us to decide who's going to be on this 53-man roster, who's going to come back on the practice squad. So an opportunity for young guys to continue to show that they belong and we're going to have some hard decisions to make at the end of the week.

Along with prep for the Texans, the Cowboys have their eyes on Sept. 10 – the regular-season opener against the New York Giants at AT&T Stadium.

Wide receiver Cole Beasley said it's tough to fully determine the team's progress based on practice and preseason games where there aren't complete game plans for opponents and vice versa. But he likes the team's direction to this point.

"As a whole, this is by far the deepest team I think we've ever had in preseason," Beasley said. "Young guys included, all the rookies. These guys are so much further along than groups from the past, especially at wideout. This is the best wideout group we've had top to bottom by far. It's not even close. But it's like that at a lot of positions, so we've got a good group here."
