Fitting in:Butler was picked up as a rookie free agent in 2011 and made it to the final cuts of training camp. He spent all of last season on the practice squad. Butler can provide depth at the cornerback position, but he has also begun working in at free safety, a position that is currently shorthanded.
So Far:Butler has been quick to the ball and his willingness to play corner as well as safety has only resulted in more reps and opportunities to show his skills.
Best Asset:Besides position versatility, Butler thinks that he can contribute by "just being intelligent," he said. "This defense requires a lot of intelligence. I've always been able to understand defenses and be able to know what's coming. That comes with just preparation as well."
You Should Know:Butler has been pleasantly surprised with the ease at which he has been able to transition back and forth from cornerback to safety after playing only cornerback in college. He says, "Being at corner, you're going to make more plays because the ball is always coming at you, while at safety you have to do more containing and a little more tackling."
A Mouthful:"I think I've been pretty productive so far. I'm just trying to be as valuable as I can. I've played a little bit of free safety, nickel and cornerback in this first week. I think it's been pretty productive so far, but I've got a long way to go."
