Fitting in:Andrew Szczerba was picked up by the Cowboys in the offseason after going undrafted. Szczerba is currently the fourth option at tight end behind Jason Witten, John Phillips and James Hanna. If he is to make the final roster of 53 it will be because of his blocking ability and contributions on special teams. He also has a very good chance of making the practice squad.
So Far:With John Phillips out nursing a minor ankle injury, Szczerba has been getting more reps than usual. He has been surprisingly effective running routes and catching passes in camp so far. He only had 12 catches for 101 yards his senior season, but he has done a good job of handling everything that has been asked of him by the Cowboys.* *
Best Asset:Szczerba is a primarily a blocking tight end. His size makes him a formidable blocker, but at 6'6 he can also serve as a potential target in the passing game. His has proved to have surprisingly good hands in camp so far.
You Should Know:His senior year of college Szczerba played through a high level of adversity. Aside from being surrounded with news of the troubling incidents at Penn. State, his uncle, a police officer, was also stabbed to death last September. Szczerba did not miss a game because of the tragedy.
