The Cowboys say they don't really have a firm timetable for when to name a starter at left guard - offensive line coach Hudson Houck admits he would've liked to know 30 minutes ago.
But is there reason to believe the front five will be stabilized anytime soon? While Montrae Holland has been out with knee and back pain, the position has become clouded. Kyle Kosier moved over to the right side, while rookie David Arkin went left. Then on Monday, it was rookie Bill Nagy taking over with the first-team offense.
Right now, Holland would still be considered the starter whenever he is healthy again, according to the position coach.
"He would be," Houck said. "He's a veteran guy that we have as our starter at this particular point."
Not exactly a ringing endorsement. The Cowboys have valued stability and continuity with their offensive line for years, so it's obvious they would like to make a decision as soon as possible with the season approaching. But it won't be as vital until the team starts working on the New York Jets, the Week 1 opponent.
"Right now we're still installing plays," Jason Garrett said. "We're not really talking about game-planning our defense, game-planning opposing defenses."
Speaking to the media over the weekend, defensive coordinator Rob Ryan said that planning for the Jets game would begin this week.
