Mailbag: Lance Lenoir's Chances? Safety Option?

Mailbag082918-hero

Do you think the Lance Lenoir experiment is over? He really struggled against the Cardinals (granted Byron Jones running into him wasn't his fault). But he isn't having much impact on special teams or even in the offense when he's in there. I know they want him to pan out, but do you think he makes the team?

- JOSH HANSON / SAN ANTONIO, TX

Bryan: I think he's practiced well, but as you've mentioned, he hasn't had the production in the games. The discussion for him is going to be if he's better than Deonte Thompson. Thompson had one of his best days of practice on Tuesday and is a favorite of the staff. I am betting that Lenoir doesn't make the final roster and will be subjected to the waiver wire where some receiver-needy teams will consider him.

Rob: Yes, Lenoir has been one of the most consistent receivers in practice, and I do think the punt return role is likely split between Tavon Austin and Cole Beasley when the games start. Now, Jason Garrett does say any bubble player must show he's capable of helping somewhere on special teams to justify a roster spot. It's just going to depend on how heavy the Cowboys want to go at receiver. I like Thompson's chances of making team, too. Seven seems awfully heavy.

Too late for the next few weeks, but what about giving Anthony Brown some practice reps at free safety? He certainly has speed, and maybe playing back would eliminate some of the holding penalties. Jordan Lewis would be there to play the slot and continue improving.

- FRANK LOONEY / DAYTON, OH

Bryan: I remember when Rob Ryan put Brandon Carr at safety in a few scheme situations with some fairly good results. I don't think it's a terrible idea, so I will ask around and see what kind of answer we get back. Brown is a willing tackler, which will help, but I do wonder if there will be questions about him and the way he plays with his eyes? There are snaps where he doesn't always see it clearly.

Rob: Always respect a good brainstorm, Frank, especially at a thin position. But the plan here seems to be trying to get by for a couple more weeks until Xavier Woods is back. Looks like Kavon Frazier is going to be all right. I don't think they move Brown.
