Mailbag: Reasoning For Releasing Terrance Mitchell? Jaylon Smith Update?

COLLIN CLARKTRENTON, TX
I think it's interesting that the Cowboys released Terrance Mitchell. I read that Anthony Brown was getting first team reps, so is it safe to assume they feel they've found something special in Brown and Mitchell was just the odd man out... or was there something going on with Mitchell that we just don't know about?

Bryan: There are several corners getting an opportunity to play in the nickel role, so I wouldn't read too much into that. As far as Mitchell, they tried him at a couple of different spots and it just wasn't going the right direction. Remember that there is a new coach in charge of the cornerbacks – so just keep that in mind when we see the makeup of this secondary going forward.

David:At this point in the game, I don't think it's even safe to assume that the decision to cut Mitchell means anything about Anthony Brown. It was a bit of a surprising move, but the Cowboys thought they could improve the position another way. Mitchell played well in a limited opportunity last year, but he was no given to make the 53-man roster. I expect they'll sign a couple more corners from elsewhere to try to improve the depth. It's a pretty typical decision that happens every summer.

Haven't heard much about Jaylon Smith besides the draft and shadowing Sean Lee, but what is his current progress?*

Bryan: Nothing new to really report. He is working out with the team in the weight room for the offseason program – so he is making gains there but I am still under the belief that we will not see him until this time next season.

David:We've gotten a few questions about this, so I think it's important to remind readers what the prospects are for Jaylon Smith's recovery. Smith has been doing a light amount of on-field rehab with the athletic trainers, but we're still a long way off from being able to talk about him in a football sense. The reason you haven't heard many updates is that I don't think there will be new information to report in the near future.
