Mailbag: Weeden's Future When Romo Returns? Tyrone Crawford's Performance?

ELLIOTT KEYMOLENHOUSTON, TX

Do you think the Cowboys will cut Brandon Weeden when Romo gets back? I don't assume they will carry four quarterbacks, and I really hope they won't cut Kellen Moore.

Rob:You're probably assuming right that they won't keep four quarterbacks on the 53-man roster. The most logical move would be trying to get Moore back to the practice squad. Either way, this coaching staff does like his ability. Given that we haven't even seen Matt Cassel take a game snap, it's just too early to know what they'll do a month from now. Who knows, they might need Weeden to play again over the next four games.

David:It seems unrealistic for them to carry four quarterbacks once Romo returns, and I bet there's going to be a debate when that time comes. Weeden is still an experienced starter and gives them a bit of security at the position, but the coaching staff really likes Moore as a developmental prospect for the future. If I had to guess, I'd say they cut Moore. But I wouldn't be surprised to see them move on from Weeden.

Through the first five games of this season, in your opinions has Tyrone Crawford played up to the expectations of a $45 million deal?

Rob: Crawford was asked directly about his performance after three games, and he said then he believed he could play better. He's seeing more double teams this season, and that's a sign of respect, as well as something he'll have to adjust to in his fourth year. For what it's worth, he's tied for the defense lead in sacks (2) and ranks second in quarterback pressures (9). I think he has been solid overall and will play better with Greg Hardy and Randy Gregory demanding blockers' attention on the edges.

David: I'd love to hear the coaches' answer to this question. Crawford is only on pace for 19 tackles, but he also has two sacks – putting him on pace for six this year. There's also no denying that he has been disruptive from his under-tackle spot. But he could definitely be better, as he's tended to disappear at times. The arrival of Greg Hardy and Randy Gregory to take the pressure off him should only help. I expect his performance to improve in the coming weeks.
