FRISCO, Texas – One day after being named head coach, Brian Schottenheimer can turn his attention to the coaching staff.

Getting his coordinators in place is a top priority as he has now hired two of them on Tuesday.

Nick Sorensen has officially been named special teams coordinator, a position he held in Jacksonville in 2021. Earlier in the day, Schottenheimer hired Matt Eberflus as the defensive coordinator.

Most recently, Sorensen spent the last three seasons with the 49ers, including last year as the defensive coordinator.

Sorensen, a 10-year veteran as a player from 2001-10, has plenty of playing experience on special teams. As a coach, he was an assistant on the Seahawks' staff in 2013-16. Sorensen has been on staff with Schottenheimer before, both serving on the Jaguars staff in 2021.

The special teams job was vacated by John Fassel, whose contract expired along with the rest of the Cowboys coaches back on January 14.

Fassel has since joined the Titans and took fellow assistant Rayna Stewart as well.

The Cowboys have four key special teams players that will be free agents, including three unrestricted free agents. Punter Bryan Anger, long snapper Trent Sieg and special teams ace C.J. Goodwin all have expiring contracts in March. All-Pro returner KaVontae Turpin is a restricted free agent and could demand some interest from other teams, especially the Titans with two former Cowboys coaches now on the staff.
