IRVING, Texas– Heading into Thursday, the Cowboys had two coaches already leave the staff. Now a third is gone and a fourth could be behind him.
On Thursday, assistant coach Dave Borganzi was hired by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a defensive quality control coach. Borganzi has been with the team for two years ago as an offensive assistant.
Borganzi was one of six Cowboys assistant coaches whose contracts expired last season. Another one is tight ends coach Wes Phillips, who was in Washington D.C. on Thursday interviewing for a coaching staff position. It was unclear the exact spot Phillips was meeting for, but the tight end position was open after Sean McVay was elevated to offensive coordinator on newly-hired Jay Gruden's staff.
Phillips has been with the Cowboys since 2007 when he joined his father's staff as a quality control coach. The son of Wade Phillips and grandson of Bum Phillips, Wes spent just one season as tight ends coach, but has also been assistant offensive line coach for two years.
Other coaches whose contracts are expiring include Keith O'Quinn, Joe Baker and Ben Bloom. Assistant special teams coach Chris Boniol's contract expired and he has already left the team in a move he called a "mutual decision."
Bloom, Baker and O'Quinn and have all been at the Cowboys' practice facility this week.
The rest of the coaches, including defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, offensive coordinator Bill Callahan and defensive line coach Rod Marinelli are all under contract.
DE Surgery
Add George Selvie to the list of players who underwent offseason surgery.
Selvie, who popped up on the injury report toward the middle of the season with a shoulder issue, went ahead and got surgery on the shoulder after fighting through the injury to play in all 16 games last season. He also battled back problems late in the year.
The defensive end still started every game for the injured Anthony Spencer and wound up with seven sacks, finishing second on the team in the category, after arriving with the team in training camp.
Selvie's previous high in sacks was 1.5 his rookie year in 2010. This was by far the most productive season of his stint in the NFL. He also forced the first fumble of his career.
He's among a handful of Cowboys to undergo offseason surgeries in an attempt to be ready as quickly as possible when the team reconvenes for offseason workouts.
In addition to Selvie, Dwayne Harris and Caesar Rayford both also repaired their shoulders in the offseason, while tackle Doug Free cleaned up his ankle and other players are expected to get minor surgeries before the start of next season. [embedded_ad]
DeMarcus Ware still hasn't undergone a scope on his elbow, as he indicated was a likelihood after the season, but that plan could still change.

Cowboys Testify
Current members of the Cowboys are now testifying in Josh Brent's intoxication manslaughter trial.
The trial began Monday, but it wasn't until Thursday that Cowboys players Barry Church and Danny McCray took the stand. Orlando Scandrick was also at the courthouse for the trial but did not testify Thursday.
Brent has been accused of driving drunk and crashing his vehicle, resulting in the death of his Cowboys teammate and friend, Jerry Brown, on Dec. 8, 2012. If convicted, Brent could face up to 20 years in prison.
Cowboys players who were reportedly with Brent earlier in the night of the accident have been called in to testify.
Brent, who played in 12 games in 2012 and would have competed for a starting spot as a defensive tackle last season, has since retired.
