FRISCO, Texas – It's uncertain how much playing time Dak Prescott will get in the Cowboys' final two preseason games, but as the team moves through its final set of training camp practices at The Star in Frisco, the second-year quarterback is pleased with the results.
Good and bad.
Prescott admits he's taken chances with throws at times in camp, weighing whether he should make a similar decision in a game situation. Better to find out now than when the score counts.
"Some of the times during this camp I kind of gauged my risk versus reward – what throws I felt like I could make, what throws I have confidence in making down the field," he said.
"I'm happy with what I've learned. I threw a couple of picks. I probably threw more picks this camp than I did last year, but they were all worthy picks, knowing when it left my hand that there was a chance of it getting picked. That's something that I know going forward going into a game that I won't make that throw. And a lot of it has to do with the situation, the down and distance, the score, where we are in the game."
Overall, Prescott has been decisive and accurate in practice. And in his lone preseason appearance so far, he completed 7 of 8 passes for 106 yards and a touchdown in last Saturday's win over the Colts.
Looking back at film last year, Prescott noticed plays where he could have made throws down the field. This year, he says his on-field rapport with receivers such as Dez Bryant and Cole Beasley has developed.
Typically, starters get the most playing time in the next-to-last preseason game. Prescott said however much he plays Saturday against the Raiders, he and the offense can benefit from game tempo and competing against another team.
He also believes the team has put in the work necessary for the season opener.
"I'm ready," he said. "And that's all come from camp and it's preparing."
