FRISCO, Texas – To create salary cap room ahead of the 2017 league year, the Cowboys have restructured the contracts of All-Pro offensive linemen Tyron Smith and Travis Frederick.
In recent years the Cowboys have restructured contracts of franchise cornerstones to create cap space by converting a portion of a player's scheduled base salary into signing bonus money. Doing such with the Smith and Frederick deals will reportedly create about $17 million in cap space this year.
The 2017 league year begins March 9, signaling the start to free agency and trading period. The NFL has not announced a salary cap figure for 2017 yet, but the Cowboys' restructures will help create space for upcoming free agent decisions – they have 20 free agents to be – and signing their eventual 2017 draft class.
Smith and Frederick are signed through 2023. Both made the Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro in 2016 along with fellow offensive line starter Zack Martin.
