Rookie Watch: Experienced At Center, McDermott Eyes Backup Line Spot

(Editor's Note: With the offseason practices now complete, the Cowboys will take some downtime before departing for training camp on July 28. Until then, let's focus on some of the more unknown rookies on this team, fighting for a roster spot. Today's featured player is center Shane McDermott.)

Name: Shane McDermott
Position: Center
College: Miami
Height/Weight: 6-4 / 300
Acquired: Undrafted Free Agent

Jersey Number: 62

Collegiate Career:McDermott was a three-year starter at center for the Hurricanes, making 36 straight starts. He also appeared in 10 games as a redshirt freshman in 2011. As a senior, McDermott and the offensive line helped the Miami offense generate high yardage totals against three top programs: Nebraska (435 yards), Florida State (492) and South Carolina (422) in his final college game.[embeddedad0]

Did You Know?McDermott was a first-team All-ACC selection as a senior, the first all-conference honors of his college career.

2015 Outlook:McDermott played almost exclusively center at Miami, but he got a chance to show his versatility by lining up at both center and guard during the Cowboys' offseason workouts. Seven-year veteran Mackenzy Bernadeau is the projected backup center as training camp nears, but McDermott will push for a backup interior swing spot on the 53-man roster or the practice squad.

Scout's Take:

  • Smooth to get away from the line. Nice position to get his hands inside on the pass block. Will pull when uncovered.
  • Mirrors his man in pass set. Can reach a one-tackle.
  • Good job of finishing his block. Some push-shove, but stays after it.
  • Gets to the edge when he pulls and out in space.
