OXNARD, Calif. – Just one more practice until the Cowboys head off to face San Francisco in the first game of the preseason.
While we wait on that, here's my notebook from Wednesday's afternoon practice:
Wednesday's practice saw several young players make standout plays. Who caught Bryan Broaddus' eye in his daily scouting notebook?

These young receivers continue to do a good job of making plays to get noticed in practice. Jalen Guyton hauled in a pass from Cooper Rush that, when I saw it leave Rush's hand, I thought he had no chance to grab. Rush threw a rope to the outside and Guyton stopped his route, then going full extension backward, was able to get his hands on the ball to bring it in. To be honest, it appeared that Guyton caught the ball with his fingertips and somehow managed to bring the ball into his body.

Good double-move by Devin Smith to free himself against C.J. Goodwin on a vertical route down the field. There was never a doubt that Mike White was going to throw the ball in his direction. Smith took advantage of Goodwin with the way he tracked the ball, which was thrown a little short. Smith slammed on the brakes and was able to adjust to the ball waist high near the sideline all while getting both of his feet down as he secured the catch.

What an aware play by Taco Charlton on the jet sweep to Michael Gallup to his side. Since the injury to Robert Quinn on Wednesday, Charlton has filled in for him at right end. Generally, with the backfield action going away it takes the defender down to the inside while the ball goes the opposite direction. Charlton had just a split second to make the read and he did just that. Just as Gallup was handed the ball, Charlton was on top of him slowing him up before he could get around the corner. Jaylon Smith and Xavier Woods were right there to help with the tackle.

Kellen Moore has been creative with his playing calling at practice to this point, but he might want to go back to the drawing board with his tight end screen. I like the concept and the design, but Kris Richard had a different idea by playing man coverage on the play. With Jeff Heath down in the box on Jason Witten, the play never had a chance. Heath was able to beat the block of Connor Williams and trap Witten along the line before Witten had a chance to get going. Nice call by Richard to counter what Moore was trying to do to him.

Nice Cover 2 beater by Dak Prescott to hit Jason Witten down the middle of the field. Both Witten and Prescott saw the development of the coverage. Joe Thomas dropped to take the middle of the field, but he turned his back turned to the play. Witten was able to run by Justin March-Lillard and away from Jeff Heath to make the reception. The ball was put in a perfect spot by Prescott for the finish.

Good snap in the Compete Period for Donovan Wilson against Codey McElroy. Wilson gives up some size to McElroy, but he was able to slow him up along the line of scrimmage in order to place himself in position to carry the route. McElroy attempted to lean on Wilson to get separation, but he managed to hang in there. Cooper Rush delivered what I thought was a strike, but just as McElroy extended for it Wilson knocked it out of his hands and to the ground to prevent what would have been a huge play.

I haven't been impressed with Jamize Olawale as a blocker in the this camp, but I couldn't imagine a better reception from a fullback 25 yards down the field. Clever design to sneak Olawale into the route off a play action fake to the back as well as the receiver on the "ghost" motion. There was so much going on the backfield that the linebackers completely lost track of Olawale on the play. He was 20 yards down the field before Justin March-Lillard came over to attempt to defend the play. Cooper Rush put the ball right where it needed to be to allow Olawale to make the catch.

We hadn't had a fight during this camp but we did on Wednesday. The scuffle was between La'el Collins and rookie Trysten Hill. If you really want to know who started the fight, we need to look to no other than Joe Looney. Hill was locked up with Collins on the outside while Looney was looking for someone to block. Looney came across and hit Hill in the ribs, knocking him to the ground. Once there, Collins jumped on top of Hill, pinning him there. Hill didn't appreciate that. When both men got to their feet, Hill took two swings at Collins with Collins firing back two of his own. It was two heavyweights going at it until till teammates rushed in to separate them.
