Scout's Notebook: 40 Times Important For Big Linemen

INDIANAPOLIS – Here's a few things from my Scout's Notebook that I'm seeing at the combine Saturday morning:

  • Good start to the day for several offensive linemen here on the field at Lucas Oil Stadium. I keep mentioning guard Jonathan Cooper and how he has managed to continue to impress the scouts with his abilities. Was able to posted a 40 in the 5.1 range than backed it up with some solid drill work where he showed the coaches and scouts that not only can he move laterally well but also do it as a guard and center.
  • When this Combine opened, I gave you a name of a player to watch, Terron Armstead of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Armstead was a college left tackle and his first 40 out of the blocks, he wakes the scouts up with a time in the 4.69 range. These numbers are really no shock to me because you see this type of movement on tape. The drills were fine and looked very comfortable going through them. Stage is not too big for this kid.
    • DJ Fluker of Alabama is not going to look pretty doing these drills, he is not quick footed and on Friday he only benched 225 21 times but don't let that fool you. He is a powerful player and he does get movement at the point of attack. He was able to block some of the better defensive ends in this draft consistently and did show he could move his feet. This game isn't always how pretty you look doing your job but how dominating you are doing it. If you get down on Fluker, you are making a mistake because it is about what you do at the snap not running around in t-shirts and shorts. [embedded_ad]
  • Some heights and weights from the defensive linemen this morning. Ziggy Ansah 6-5, 271, Sharrif Floyd 6-3, 297, Dantone Jones 6-4, 283 and Dion Jordan 6-6, 248, Sheldon Richardson 6-3, 294, K.K. Short 6-3 299, Bjoern Werner 6-3, 266, Brandon Williams 6-1, 335 and Sylvester Williams 6-3, 313.
