Physical, downhill defender against the run. Quick trigger and first-step quickness on his reads. Takes great angles to the ball and is a sure tackler. Good leverage when he connects with a blocker or ball carrier. | He’s susceptible to misdirection and the double-move. Was burnt a few times on this, especially out of the slot. Not equipped with the speed to play over the top or sideline-to-sideline. |
OVERVIEW: Part of the golden era of defense for the Hawkeyes. Castro was an All-American in 2023 when playing beside Cooper DeJean, then All-Big Ten in 2024 after DeJean was drafted. However, Castro's journey to being one of the best safeties in the country is even more remarkable. He was recruited out of high school just outside of Chicago as a dual-threat quarterback, and made the full-time jump to safety in 2021. Since then, his technique and vision have proven to be among the best in the draft class. If only he had the size and speed combo of other top prospects.
