CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Trevon Diggs and the Dallas Cowboys have come to terms on just how long it might take for the All-Pro cornerback to return to the field, having attempted to play through the issue in Week 14 against the Cincinnati Bengals before the worst-case scenario was concluded in the days to follow.
Set to undergo season-ending surgery on his knee, Diggs is expected to require roughly eight months to recover from the injury, per Stephen Jones ahead of the matchup against the Carolina Panthers.
"Unfortunately, he had an incident in the game, and hat's off to him for trying to play through it," said Jones. "I don't think he made it any worse. It's a cartilage issue that finally came loose on him. … It's gonna take a little bit of time for him to get back, probably eight months."
This marks the second knee injury in as many seasons for Diggs and though this one is on the same knee that ended his season in September 2023, the current injury is not tied to the surgically-repaired ACL, which remains intact and without issue.
And, to that point, the Cowboys have been able to enjoy the starting trio of Diggs, DaRon Bland and Jourdan Lewis for only one game over the course of their careers.
This also means Diggs will be one of several prime candidates to begin next year's training camp on the team's PUP (physically unable to perform) list in late July. Other candidates will include Dak Prescott, DeMarvion Overshown, Josh Butler, John Stephens Jr. and Zack Martin, should the future first ballot Hall of Famer opt to continue his career.
Those who begin camp on the PUP list will have the ability to return to practice prior to the start of the regular season and avoid injured reserve that could threaten the beginning of their regular season and/or more.
Diggs ends the 2024 season having played in 11 games, producing 42 combined tackles, 11 pass break ups and two interceptions.
