Updates: Liufau, starting CBs questionable

Oct. 4

3:10 p.m. - A new quad injury to linebacker Marist Liufau has him on the latest injury report for the Cowboys.

The rookie was limited in Friday's practice and is now 'questionable' to play Sunday night in Pittsburgh. Liufau joins both Trevon Diggs (ankle) and Caelen Carson (shoulder) with the questionable status for Sunday, although it's expected that Diggs will play.

If Carson misses another game, the Cowboys will likely turn to Andrew Booth again or Amani Oruwariye, who is on the practice squad but finished the game last week against the Giants and had a game-sealing interception.

------------

3:04 p.m. - For the first time in his career, Micah Parsons will miss a game due to injury.

Parsons has been officially ruled out for Sunday night's game in Pittsburgh with a high-ankle sprain.

Parsons missed the 2021 season finale against the Eagles due to COVID-19 protocols, but that's the only game he's missed during his young career.

Through the first four games, Parsons has just one sack, but leads the team with 21 quarterback pressures.

11 a.m. — When the injury report was filed by the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday afternoon, it featured Trevon Diggs amidst the list of others dealing with an issue of some sort.

The All-Pro cornerback was limited with an ankle injury, but there isn't any concern about his availability for the looming primetime matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

"In my opinion, Trevon is gonna be great," owner and general manager Jerry Jones told 105.3 The Fan on Friday. "Just gave us a little scare there in practice."

That's good news, especially considering the absence of DaRon Bland (IR) and Caelen Carson, the latter trying to work his way back to the field after missing the Week 4 contest against the New York Giants with a shoulder injury.

4:11 p.m. - The Cowboys have a rather lengthy injury report this week, one that probably will be trimmed down as we get closer to Sunday's game in Pittsburgh.

However, we still know there will be some big names not playing, such as Micah Parsons and Brandin Cooks, while DeMarcus Lawrence is now on injured reserve and DaRon Bland remains on IR as well.

On Thursday, the Cowboys added Trevon Diggs to the report as he was limited in practice with an ankle injury. Ezekiel Elliott was also limited due to dehydration.

Check out the entire injury report for the Cowboys and Steelers as we prep for Sunday's game in Pittsburgh.

11:30 a.m. - Marshawn Kneeland will be asked to do much more over the next several weeks, even more so than when the team lost Sam Williams to a torn ACL before the start of the season.

Injuries to both Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence thrusts the rookie second-round pick onto center stage in Week 5 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

On Thursday, head coach Mike McCarthy discussed Kneeland's outlook in the absence of two headline defensive ends.

"I think the biggest thing is to own his role," said McCarthy. "His role will be different this week and, without getting into specifics, he just needs to focus on that. He's been playing in a couple different spots and special teams responsibilities. Of all the rookies who have played the first four games, he's played the most positions. ... When we get to Sunday, he'll be able to focus more and have a more limited menu."

3:33 p.m. - The Cowboys are hoping to get some help back in the secondary this week after seeing two key players miss the Giants game. One of them - rookie cornerback Caelen Carson - returned to practice on a limited basis on Wednesday. After starting the first three games of the season, Carson was held out of the last game with a shoulder injury.

Another DB who was in full participation on Wednesday was safety Markquese Bell, who also missed the Giants game with an ankle injury.

The Cowboys have enough issues on the D-line with both Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence both missing the game on Sunday. At least, the secondary could be nearing full strength. Cornerback DaRon Bland remains on IR but could be returning soon from a stress fracture in his foot.

------------

2:49 p.m. - As we all expected, Tyler Guyton has been tested often during the first four games of his young NFL career.

His last game in New York was an example how challenging things can get, as he was called for three holding calls. Currently, Guyton leads the team with seven penalties against him.

But it's not something that sits easy with the rookie, who said he's studying those moments and knows it comes down to technique.

"Just breaking the tape back down and figuring out what I need to do better. It is on me," Guyton said. "At the end of the day, if my hands were better, I wouldn't have got called for a flag. So just going back to the drawing board and figuring out what I need to do to make myself a better player."

The tests don't get easier anytime soon as Guyton will likely see plenty of T.J. Watt, who led the NFL in sacks last year with 19 and currently has 99.5 for his career.

8:59 a.m. - Despite the Cowboys ranking last in the NFL in rushing and having an extra time to prepare for this week's game in Pittsburgh, it still doesn't seem to be the week for Dalvin Cook to get his first action.

Cowboys owner/GM Jerry Jones said "probably not this week" when asked about Cook Tuesday morning on 105.3 "The Fan."

The Cowboys are averaging just 75.3 yards per game, but it appears they are not looking to change the personnel that includes Rico Dowdle, Ezekiel Elliott and Deuce Vaughn, along with fullback Hunter Luepke, who is getting a bigger role in the offense the last two games.

Sept. 30

12:30 p.m. – Caelen Carson is currently on track to potentially return when the Dallas Cowboys take on the Pittsburgh Steelers in primetime on Sunday.

The rookie fifth-round pick missed the victory over the New York Giants with a shoulder injury suffered in the loss against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 3, putting the Cowboys down their immediate replacement for All-Pro cornerback DaRon Bland, the latter working to return from injured reserve.

It looks as if at least one of the two could be on the field this weekend.

"I think Carson has a real chance," said executive vice president and director of player personnel Stephen Jones to 105.3 The Fan on Monday. "I think Bland is a longer shot. We'll see. I think [Bland] is really starting to pick it up now, in terms of the workload that Britt [Brown] is giving him. We'll continue to monitor his situation as we move forward."

Sept. 26

11:21 p.m. – Having to leave the game in the second half, defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence said "I'll be fine" when asked about his sprained foot injury.

Lawrence, who recorded the only sack of the game for the Cowboys, had to leave for the locker room after suffering the injury late in the third quarter.

"It's just a sprained foot, but I'll be fine." Lawrence said. "We will use these (10 days of rest) to get ready for another big game in Pittsburgh next week."

------------

10:44 p.m. – The Cowboys rewarded Lamb with one of the largest contracts in NFL history back in August, with the idea he would deliver consistent big plays.

Lamb had the longest pass play and running play of the night for the Cowboys, including his 55-yard touchdown in the second quarter.

Lamb also had a 10-yard run, becoming the only player on the Cowboys' roster with multiple 10+-yard carries this season.

However, after recording six catches for 94 yards at the half, Lamb only had one reception for four yards to finish the game.

------------

10:39 p.m. - In a game in which the Cowboys' stifled the Giants' running game with a 1.1 yard average, linebacker Eric Kendricks was the one making many of the stops.

In fact, Kendricks was credited with 13 tackles.

"Games like this come down to being physical and making plays in the trenches. I thought we fought back tonight and forced them into passing the ball. We made an effort to stop the run, and we did."

The Cowboys entered the game ranked last in the NFL in run defense allowing 185.7 yards per game. After allowing just 26 on the ground Thursday, that average dropped to 145.7.

------------

10:33 p.m. – Showing that he's human, Aubrey had his first missed field goal of the season, pushing a 52-yard attempt wide right in the final seconds of the game.

The kick would've given the Cowboys an 8-point lead.

"I just opened up hips up a little more on that kick," Aubrey said. "It's disappointing. I need to do a better job of just concentrating with the clock winding down."

Aubrey was referring to the fact the Cowboys were trying to milk as much time off the clock as possible, running the play clock down to about five seconds when he attempted the kick.

Still, it wasn't a bad night for Aubrey, who made two other field goals, including a 60-yarder in the second quarter.

Aubrey is now one of four kickers in NFL history to have three different field goals of 60+ yards.

------------

10:21 p.m. - Easily his most productive game of his career, fullback Hunter Luepke did a lot of the dirty work for the Cowboys on Thursday, but did so in multiple ways.

He not only had a critical 11-yard catch on the first scoring drive of the game to extend a drive, but later picked up a first down on a third-down as well. Luepke then added a third-down run for a first down on the final offensive drive to milk more clock.

And if that wasn't enough, he led the team with two special teams tackles.
