Make no mistake, the Cowboys are calling Crayton's number. They'll probably be calling it often come Sunday night against the Giants.
Crayton knows that.
He's smart enough to realize the Giants will probably double-team Terrell Owens for most of the game. He knows the Giants will likely take their chances on Crayton beating them. And that's the part that has him the most exciting.
"You know that's what they're going to do," Crayton said. "And that's fine. But at the same time, that's just another opportunity for me. I have confidence in myself. I've always had that. So I know I'm going to get a chance to do something. I've just got to take advantage of it. But all you ask for is an opportunity."
Well, he's got one right in front of him. And the timing couldn't be better.
Crayton signed a one-year, $1.3 million contract as a restricted free agent this off-season. The Cowboys thought so much of him they made sure any team that wanted him not only would have to outbid them on that price, but give up a first-round draft pick as well.
But that also means he's an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season. So what better time to land himself a starting role for the Cowboys then to do so in a "contract year"?
Now Crayton says that doesn't matter. But we all know that it does.
"We don't even worry about contracts right now," he said. "But the opportunity does go up a lot. But I'm looking forward to the New York Giants."
And the Giants are probably looking forward to Crayton, too. I'm sure it didn't hurt anyone's feelings up there in the Big Apple to learn that Glenn would not play this game and the Cowboys will be relying on Crayton, a player whose seven career starts all occurred last year when the Cowboys lined up three receivers.
This game will actually be Crayton's first start as one of the top receivers.
"Of course I'm excited," he said. "This is what I've been waiting for. I hate that it happened this way. Hopefully Terry can come back. But right now, I've got to make the most of this. I need to try to help this team win any way that I can. We've got a guy down. And I've got to do my part to help pick up the slack.
"Receiver, punt returns, quarterback, whatever they need."
And if that means Crayton has to jump into the Rowdy outfit before the game, he'd probably be down for that, too.
