FRISCO, Texas - It looks like the Dallas Cowboys will turn to Cooper Rush for the foreseeable future at the quarterback position, a spot that he's been in before for the Cowboys and had success.
Dak Prescott is expected to miss at least Sunday's game with the Eagles, and potentially even going to injured reserve after suffering a hamstring injury in the Cowboys 27-21 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday afternoon. The Cowboys have not made an announcement on Prescott's status, but head coach Mike McCarthy is scheduled to meet with the media at 3 p.m. (CT).
Rush checked into the game for Prescott on Sunday in the fourth quarter, completing 13 of his 25 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown to get Dallas to within six points late. It was Rush's first game action since the Cowboys' blowout loss to Detroit, but it didn't take long for him to settle in.
"It takes a couple snaps and you're right back into game mode," Rush said. "Luckily I've been around for a while in this offense and this system with these guys, so it does make it easier."
Now, it appears Rush's snaps will increase drastically as he takes the keys to the offense if Prescott misses time, something that he was able to do in 2022 when Prescott suffered a calf injury. Rush went on start five games and win four of them, keeping Dallas' season alive while throwing for 956 yards and five touchdowns. Dallas resigned him for a reason in 2023, and now Rush's experience will need to come into play again to try and keep the 2024 season afloat.
"Every rep you've banked your whole life, you count on," Rush said. "Obviously it's a new year, different group, things like that, but for the most part, a lot of similarities and I've played with a lot of these guys before."
If Prescott is in fact out, Rush's first start will come on Sunday afternoon against the Philadelphia Eagles. Rush's last start came against Philadelphia in 2022, where he threw for 181 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.
