OXNARD, Calif. - When the Cowboys drafted Tyler Guyton in the first round back in April, it seemed only a matter of time before he would take over as the starting left tackle.
That time seems to be now, especially after an injury to Chuma Edoga in the game last Sunday against the Rams.
Edoga suffered a toe injury that is expected to sideline the veteran for at least a month, and maybe even 6-8 weeks depending on his rehab. Either way, the Cowboys' experience and depth at tackle has taken an immediate hit, considering Edoga's ability to play both tackle positions and guard. Edoga has 43 career games played and 17 starts, including six last year for the Cowboys.
Edoga could eventually land on injured reserve with the chance to return at some point in the regular season.
The injury likely will push Guyton immediately into the starter role at left tackle, a spot he was expected to take over sooner than later.
Edoga played the first series against the Rams on Sunday in LA and was scbheduled to play th first quarter before the injury. Guyton entered the game for the second series, but after missing more than a week of practice with an illness, the rookie from Oklahoma only played one series in the first half, replaced by Earl Bostick.
Guyton did return in the second half for a couple of series.
But the Cowboys now must figure out how to replace Edoga from a depth standpoint. Other tackles on the roster behind starters Terence Steele and Guyton include Asim Richards, Matt Waletzko, Bostick and rookie Nathan Thomas, who has also played guard.
