It's looking more and more like the Cowboys won't draft Ashton Jeanty at pick No. 12, even if he is still available. However, I believe that is a mistake. Why would Dallas pass on a generational talent at a "devalued" position like running back just to take a good prospect at a "more valued" position? I think they should take the very special player in Jeanty if they have the chance. – Keith Jones/Sumrall, MS
Nick: Here's the reality of the situation - if he's truly a "generational talent" ... he won't be there at 12. You can't tell me none of the top 11 teams don't need that kind of difference-maker. There are always exceptions to the rule, but with every team grading these guys like they do, if a player falls past the first 10-12 picks, then he's not viewed as generational.
It's the same with Micah Parsons. Yes, he proved to be a difference maker and should've been picked in the Top 3. But he wasn't viewed that way. Now, to your question, I don't think the Cowboys will pass on him at 12 if he's there. I think they would take him, but I don't think he'll be there.
Patrik: Respectfully, I'm not sure what you're basing the "it's looking more and more like" comment on, other than droves of mock drafts and talking heads steering your thinking when, in actuality, the Cowboys haven't completed their board yet and don't know themselves what direction they will or will not go. I am personally of the mindset that if Jeanty is there at No. 12, they pull that trigger and don't think twice about it, and maybe I'm proven wrong on Day 1, but I promise you no one knows what it's "looking more and more like" on March 28. That said, if they were to pass on Jeanty, something that would floor me, mind you, I'd have to suspect it's because this is a deep class of talented RBs (though only Jeanty is the arguably generational one) and maybe they'd consider using a second-round pick on one while using the first-round pick on another top position of need (e.g., WR, DE). There is something to be said for how positions are valued in the NFL, absolutely, but I'm with you in believing BPA matters and, if he's there, Jeanty would be my best player available. But if they feel the class if WRs, for example, is more shallow than RBs, then ... well... there you go.
