ATLANTA – Following a 27-21 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday afternoon, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones reiterated that he's still "all in" on the 2024 season, and that he'll do whatever it takes to help improve his team after a 3-5 start.
"We're going to do everything we can at all times to improve this team, and in our judgement, if what you have to give up helps improve it, we'll do it," Jones said. "I know everybody understands, I don't think I have to say it, but we'll go for it."
That seemed to be hinting at the Cowboys making a potential move ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline, which Jones confirmed and further indicated that some moves may already be in the process of being made.
"We could, yes," Jones said when asked if the Cowboys could make a trade this week. "It takes two to tango, but we've got some things in the mix."
He added that there is "concern" for the state of team right now.
"We'll probably do a couple of things this week of note, if things work out the way we'd like for them to," Jones said. "Bottom line is if you knew exactly what to do this wouldn't be the game that it is in the NFL."
Jones and the front office had been steadfast in saying that they liked their roster and felt they could win with who they currently have, but with the injury list piling up and being two games below .500, it may be time for a change. Regardless, his belief in the current team locker room is still steady.
"That room is full of guys that can get it done," Jones said. "I believe in them, coaches and all."
That confidence expands to head coach Mike McCarthy, who is in the final year of his contract with the Cowboys but still has Jones' full backing.
"I'm good with Mike. I know how hard he works, I like his football mind, I know how good he works," Jones said. "He's got, in my mind, an outstanding coaching record. He's really good with the players, they think highly of him. He's got a lot of fire in his belly."
It was clear that this loss was a heartbreaking one for Jones, who recognizes that this is not a great time for Cowboys football. He delivered an emotional speech and story to the team in the locker room about Michael Irvin, who came back from knee surgery to lead the team to three Super Bowls. It's those kinds of memories that has Jones seeing the light through the darkness of the first eight games of this 2024 season.
"I have seen too many times when this thing gets to looking dark, I've seen a positive jump up there and go from there," Jones said. "Personally, I'm a long way from being dismayed about our team, about this year."
