There are many fun holidays to celebrate during the month of September.
National Grandparent's Day is the first Sunday after Labor Day. To love and honor our grandparents all year long is important, but this one day is set aside specifically to celebrate our special grandparents who are always there for us with hugs, kisses and homemade goodies!
What about National Cream-Filled Donut Day on September 14? Who doesn't love a special day that is filled with sugar, calories and carbs.
National Women's Friendship Day is on September 18, the third Sunday in September. This is such a great day to celebrate the women in our lives who bless us with their friendships.
On a more serious and very important note, September 11 is a day of remembrance, marking the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks against the U.S. It is a day to look back and honor the families and everyone who was affected by this tragic event, but it is also a day to say thank you to the brave soldiers who serve our country to keep this great nation free.
And last but not least, September is Self-Improvement Month!
"If we did all the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves."
– Thomas A. Edison
This month, before the rush of the holiday season begins, focus on you. There are always ways we can improve ourselves. Choose something – a dream, a goal – that you want to achieve. Remember, it won't happen overnight. These things take time, effort and patience. Here are some ways to celebrate Self-Improvement Month:
Do more for others
Make a point to do at least one (but the more the merrier) random acts of kindness a day. Simple gestures and acts of kindness mean a lot to the recipients, and in return, they make you feel good as well. You can also get more involved in your community by helping those less fortunate. Be an inspiration, a role model, a helping hand and a friend to those around you. I love the quote by Anita Roddick, founder of the Body Shop: "If you think you're too small to have an impact, try going to bed with a mosquito in the room."
Exercise
Commit to an exercise routine. Form healthy habits, which in the end will allow you to feel great both mentally and physically. It is YOU who creates the quality of life you live, and it is YOU who creates the results produced. So make a change this month! You don't have to make a drastic change and completely turn things around all at once. Try one or two simple things, such as adding in a walk around the block a few times a week or opting for celery and almond butter instead of sugary sweets. You'll be more likely to stick to it.
Change your negative thoughts to positive ones
You have control over the thoughts and images that pop into your mind and the actions you take in response to them. One thing that I love to do is read inspirational quotes each day. They keep me motivated and positive. You can also keep a journal. Writing is a great way to express yourself. Instead of focusing on negative things around you, write about the good, hopeful and encouraging aspects of your life.
Have fun
Add more fun into your life this month. Make time to schedule plans with those you love, with your friends and family. Have lunch with your best friends at a fun restaurant nearby. Conquer your fear of heights by going skydiving! Not only will it be fun, but you will feel a sense of accomplishment. Since fall is right around the corner, one thing that I find fun, is decorating. Organize your house and fill it with spice and frosted cupcake candles, fall leaves and pumpkins, and other fun holiday decorations.
Happy Self-Improvement Month! This month, remember to focus on making improvements instead of just going through life each day. Even the smallest changes can make a huge difference. Have a fabulous September!
