FRISCO, Texas – The Cowboys have added two more assistants to new head coach Brian Schottenheimer's staff, hiring David Overstreet II as secondary/cornerbacks coach and Derrick Foster as running backs coach.
Overstreet II spent the last three seasons on Eberflus' staff in Chicago as defensive backs coach, specializing in nickelbacks. He played a part in the development of Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon during his time with the Bears.
Prior to coaching the Bears, Overstreet II got his first NFL coaching experience on Eberflus' defensive staff with the Indianapolis Colts beginning in 2018. For his first three seasons, he worked as a defensive quality control coach before being promoted to assistant defensive backs coach in 2021.
In his playing days, Overstreet II was a four-year starter at safety for the University of Missouri from 2002-06. In his final two seasons with the Tigers, Overstreet II tallied 189 total tackles and was named 1st Team All-Big 12 in back-to-back seasons.
In Dallas, Overstreet II not only gets the opportunity to reunite with Eberflus, but also gets to coach two Pro Bowl caliber defensive backs in Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland. With his specialty in coaching nickelbacks, he could also have the opportunity to work with Jourdan Lewis, should the Cowboys decide to bring him back as he hits the market as an unrestricted free agent.
Foster was the running backs coach for the New Orleans Saints this past season, and coached running backs for the Los Angeles Chargers from 2021-23 in his first NFL coaching experience.
In 2024, Foster led Alvin Kamara to a career high 950 rushing yards to go along with six touchdowns. While in Los Angeles, Foster was responsible in helping Austin Ekeler, who led the league in regular-season scrimmage touchdowns with 44 during that time span.
Before making the jump to NFL coaching, Foster was the running backs coach at Samford and Iowa, where he also led recruiting efforts for the Hawkeyes on the offensive side of the ball.
The Cowboys only have two running backs currently signed on the roster in Hunter Luepke and Deuce Vaughn, as Rico Dowdle's free agency decision looms. If Dowdle returns, Foster gets to work with a running back coming off his career best season and still has room for growth. Regardless of if Dowdle returns or not, the Cowboys could add another running back in the draft or free agency, giving Foster an opportunity to develop the ground game of the future in Dallas.
