Mailbag: Best Position Battle?

If you had to pick a position, either offense or defense, what spot do you think will be the most contested and why? — PAUL MEEK / SAN ANGELO, TX

David: It's got to be linebacker, right? From the basic standpoint of resources, no other position has as many talented options competing for playing time. You've got a former All-Pro and first-round draft pick, a $70 million man who has been to a Pro Bowl, a two-time Pro Bowler who has played five years with the new defensive coordinator, and the current No. 12 overall pick in the draft. Oh and throw Jabril Cox, who everyone agrees should have been drafted earlier, for good measure. I don't envy the Cowboys, who have to figure out how to properly use all these guys. But it should be fun to watch.

Jonny: I think Dave's probably right that it's linebacker, but for the sake of being different I'll say cornerback. Trevon Diggs has one outside spot locked up barring something unforeseen. But will Anthony Brown start Week 1? Will he start 17 games? Kelvin Joseph and Nahshon Wright are going to make cases for starting jobs. And maybe they would try Jourdan Lewis on the outside. Anthony Brown deserves the respect right now, but young talent is always enticing.

I know it's probably too late for adding another veteran player who is familiar with Dan Quinn's system. But are you surprised that the Cowboys didn't pursue Richard Sherman? — DONALD DOTSON / CORONA, CA

David: I'm honestly not. I know people get tired of hearing it, but the Cowboys have made it very clear that they aren't dying to spend a ton of money due to their current salary cap situation. Even at his advanced age, I think Sherman would command more than the Cowboys would be willing to pay right now. They've also drafted three corners in the Top 100 these past two years. They're trying to get younger at the position, not older.

Jonny: I'm not surprised he's not on the roster, but I also wouldn't be surprised if we're not done hearing about it. The Cowboys are going to be counting on cornerbacks who aren't exactly valued super highly by a lot of other teams outside of Diggs. If the secondary is struggling later this summer and there are a few injuries at the position I think we'll hear about how great and in shape Sherman is.
