Did the Cowboys miss an opportunity by passing on Kellen Moore to be their next head coach? Is this Sean Payton all over again? – Larry Wittmann/St. Croix Falls, WI
Mickey: Well, comparing Kellen to Sean Payton is quite high praise. Don't think the Cowboys "blew it" by not hiring Kellen. They knew all they needed to know about their former backup quarterback, QB coach and offensive coordinator they needed to know, and obviously chose not to hire him over Brian Schottenheimer. Neither has head coaching experience, although both dads did, Marty Schottenheimer the long time NFL head coach and Kellen's dad Tom was a championship high school coach in Prosper, Wash., along with grandfather Bert Moore a legendary high school basketball coach in suburban Chicago for 11 seasons (1950-60).
So, both have good coaching genes, but think the Cowboys preferred Schottenheimer's ability to command the room over Kellen, who they did interview by the way. Time will tell, right.
Tommy: Obviously right now it's way too early to tell whether or not the Cowboys made the right decision considering neither Moore nor Brian Schottenheimer has coached a game as a head coach. That said, I do wonder how much Philadelphia's personnel had to do with Moore's success. Don't get me wrong, I think highly of Kellen Moore as a playcaller and saw real growth in how he shifted his focus to the run game in 2024, but it wouldn't have made much sense if he didn't.
The Eagles have an all-world running back in Saquon Barkley, arguably the best offensive line in football, and one of the better one-two punches at receiver in the league. Oh, and Jalen Hurts showed he's pretty good too. Frankly, it's hard not to look good with that set of weaponry around you. Does that mean Kellen Moore can't call plays and shouldn't be considered for a head coaching job? Absolutely not, but there aren't many better situations in the league than what he had in Philadelphia.
