Mailbag: Figuring Out The 53-Man Roster?

When do you think the coaches will have a pretty good idea of which players will make the team this season? Will it come down to the final preseason game? - JIM WHATLEY / HENDERSON, TX

Bryan: It very well might on a couple of roster spots. Wide receiver, linebacker and cornerback. This staff is going to need all those games and some intense meetings.

Rob: I would imagine at this point, they've got a pretty good idea what the bulk of the roster will look like when they have to make that cut to 53 on Aug. 31. But there might be a handful of spots that might not get settled until the last preseason game – and then there are always at least a couple tweaks after final cuts are made around the league. Some questions I have: who rounds out the depth chart at receiver, offensive line, defensive line, corner and safety?

With camp underway, is anyone standing out to challenge a projected starter? - MARCQUS WINBUSH / CHARLOTTE, NC

Bryan: I am not sure what they're plan is for Tyrone Crawford. Robert Quinn has looked outstanding at times and do they want to start him or bring him off the bench? That would be my only thought.

Rob: When the season starts, I don't expect much change from the starters that most of us project now. That's a little strange to say, because this has been a very competitive camp between the offense and defense. One question I still have is how they plan to rotate the defensive line. Tyrone Crawford (hip) is still on the Active/PUP list. He could end up starting at right defensive end, but regardless, Robert Quinn will have a major role there.
