Mailbag: Gus Johnson's Chances? How Have The Safeties Looked?

CHRIS KEMPROSEVILLE, CA
I read somewhere online that Gus Johnson was the most overlooked running back out of the 2015 class. What are your thoughts about him possibly making the 53-man squad, or at least the practice squad?

Bryan: I wrote about him in my Scout's Eye on Thursday. Had a really nice blitz pickup on Dustin Vaughn's touchdown pass to Devin Street. He was able to slide over and position himself right where he needed to be. Running the ball he has shown quickness and a burst. Has not looked out of place one bit. Love to see him have a practice squad shot.

Rob: Practice squad is probably Johnson's best bet at this point. It's possible the Cowboys keep four running backs for depth, but Tyler Clutts is also in the mix as a fullback. Johnson did stand out with a touchdown run in the team period on Wednesday. Tyler Patmon has proven anything is possible for a tryout player.

BOBBY MAYERPARK RIDGE, N.J.

I feel that Barry Church and J.J. Wilcox are both essentially strong safeties that can play well in the box. Have either of them shown better coverage skill so far throughout the offseason?

Bryan:Church has been better and that is because he has played more down in the box and that is his strength. Wilcox needs to find a way not to be so grabby with his hands – this has been a problem for him.

Rob:Church is a prototypical strong safety playing near the line of scrimmage. Wilcox has range to play free safety – for him, it's a matter of continuing to improve his recognition on routes. This is Year 3 of his transition from offensive skill player in college.
