Mailbag: Is cornerback a high draft need?

(Editor's Note: Time to check the mail! The DallasCowboys.com staff writers answer your questions here in 'Mailbag' presented by Miller Lite.)

With all the uncertainty at the cornerback position, why isn't it a foregone conclusion that one of the first three draft picks should be used on a corner? I've been seeing and listening to a bunch of mock drafts, and cornerback seems to be an afterthought. –** Garet Tanaka/Wailuku, HI**

Patrik: It does require consideration at some point in the three-day process, including the high-priority undrafted free agents. The reality is that Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland can't seem to stay on the field at the same time, and the former is recovering from a season-ending injury that will likely cost him some time at the beginning of next season. It will also soon be time to begin negotiations with Bland on a contract extension, and I'm left to wonder what the Cowboys' comfort level will be in having two exceptionally well-paid cornerbacks on the books.

I would personally be fine with it, considering who we're talking about here — namely two record-setting talents that follow years of inadequate cornerback play in Dallas — but we shall see. The jury remains out on what Caelen Carson will be, and Eric Scott is long gone, while Israel Mukuamu and Jourdan Lewis prepare to hit free agency with no promises of staying put in Dallas. So, yes, absolutely look into drafting another cornerback.

Tommy: Cornerback shouldn't be an afterthought. If we learned anything from last season, it was that the Cowboys weren't very deep at the position past their starting trio of Trevon Diggs, DaRon Bland, and Jourdan Lewis. So I absolutely believe that cornerback is in play in the early couple of rounds of the draft. There are some solid options that will be available in all three rounds, so it's going to be a matter of where the players fall on Dallas' board.

I don't think they'll pick a corner at 12, but it definitely is enough of a need to where it would make sense to take one on day 2 if they feel a talented enough player is available.
