I know that a lot of the focus now is on signing Micah Parsons long term, but wouldn't it behoove the Cowboys to look into locking up Tyler Smith long term now? I know that there is some time, but what he has done in such a short amount of time and now being the cornerstone of the offensive line, his price tag is going to go through the roof once he is eligible for free agency. Your thoughts?– Kenneth Jacobs/Denver, CO**
Mickey: Look, the Cowboys have enough salary cap/free-agent headaches right now with no need to pile on another. First, he's not going anywhere. Tyler Smith will be a mainstay with the Cowboys for years to come right, no matter the cost.
In May they will pick up his fifth-year option, and because he's a one-time Pro Bowler, the cost will be $21.27 million for 2026. At that point, they can look at re-signing him to a long-term contract to lessen the salary cap burden, just the way they will be trying to do so this year with Micah Parsons. Not sure how you manage your bills, but me, don't usually pay them off this far ahead of time. Yep the price usually goes up, but so does the salary cap.
Tommy: I don't think there's any harm in getting extensions done early. Injury is always going to be the risk that you take with that, but you also never know when those come, so there's no reason to hold back on a guy like Tyler Smith who has been the anchor of this offensive line and projects to be that going forward too.
Waiting too long to get guys locked up will lead to the positional market going up, as seen with recent examples like Myles Garrett and Jaycee Horn, and Tyler Smith is a player that the Cowboys should want to wear a star on his helmet for his entire career.
