Similar to the NBA, do you think the NFL should make it easier for teams to keep their own players? Like a salary-cap discount? It seems like teams are being penalized for drafting well. –**Christopher Matishek**/New York, New York
Mickey: Yes, totally agree with that, but the problem is the NFLPA likely would not agree with such alteration, wanting to create an open market to drive up the price for their players.
My suggestion on this would be to create a separate salary cap for quarterbacks. That's where the biggest cap expenditure exists and creates a huge inequity for the rest of the roster. The NFL/NFLPA should create a reasonable cap number for quarterbacks and if teams exceed that number, then maybe the excess goes into the team's entire salary cap, sort of like the luxury tax MLB teams must pay if they exceed the roster salary maximum.
Tommy: I can see why organizations would want that because of saving money and keeping their best players around, but I don't think it'll happen simply because it would make free agency a lot less interesting and that wouldn't be great for business league wide. Maybe I'm on an island here, but I enjoy seeing how teams go about the balancing act of keeping their best players while also having to account for the financial aspect of things, and it's fun to watch when it's done really well.
That said, I don't think I would necessarily be opposed to a salary cap discount for teams either. If it was up to me, I would keep the system as is now.
