Trevon Diggs begins training camp on PUP list

Trevon Diggs

OXNARD, Calif. — The Dallas Cowboys officially placed cornerback Trevon Diggs on the active/physically unable to perform list on Thursday as he continues to recover from the torn ACL that he suffered in practice last September. Diggs' placement on the list allows him to return at any point in training camp/preseason, but he would have to miss at least four games if he were to start the regular season on the list.

Diggs is the only player to start camp on the list, meaning other injured players from last season including linebacker DeMarvion Overshown (torn ACL), tight end John Stephens Jr. (torn ACL) and wide receiver David Durden (torn ACL) are all cleared after taking their physicals on Wednesday.

Other players that worked through offseason injuries who are also cleared include defensive tackle Mazi Smith (shoulder), Luke Schoonmaker (shoulder, hamstring) and Osa Odighizuwa (hamstring).

In Diggs' absence, look for the depth of the cornerback room to get more opportunities including rookie Caelen Carson, Nahshon Wright and Israel Mukuamu as the room competes for roster spots behind the solidified starters in Diggs, DaRon Bland and Jourdan Lewis.

Last August, Diggs signed a five-year, $97 million contract extension after leading the NFL in interceptions in 2021 and making his second Pro Bowl in 2022. His 2023 season was cut short after just two games due to a torn ACL suffered in practice leading up to the team's week three game against the Arizona Cardinals. He finished the season with one interception and one forced fumble.

If Diggs were to make it back in time for the team's preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams on August 11, he would still have ample opportunities to get back on the field before the start of the regular season. Diggs has been seen working with local trainers over the offseason on social media, as his change of direction and fluidness shows that he is nearing a return.
