July 30

2:51 p.m. —The Dallas Cowboys hit the practice field for the first time in pads on Tuesday morning, but rookie sixth-round pick Ryan Flournoy was still off to the side working with the rehab group.

After his press conference on Tuesday morning, head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed that Flournoy is dealing with a knee issue that is keeping him off the field for the first few practices in Oxnard. He will continue to work off to the side until he can return to full health.

In his absence, the competition for the final couple of roster spots at the wide receiver position has been hot with Tyron Billy-Johnson starting camp on a heater, KaVontae Turpin finding some consistency and Jalen Brooks taking another step with each practice that passes. Flournoy will be thrown into that mix when he is healthy enough to return.

1 p.m. — It is still undetermined when the Cowboys and CeeDee Lamb will come to terms on what will be a massive multi-year contract extension, but things are moving toward a resolution as training camp rolls along.

The First-Team All-Pro receiver is currently a holdout as talks continue, but the Cowboys submitted a new offer to Lamb on Friday and received a counteroffer from their record-setting wideout on Sunday evening — per executive vice president and director of player personnel Stephen Jones on Tuesday.

"We keep having multiple exchanges with CeeDee," Jones told 94.1 San Antonio. "He actually sent us something late (Sunday). We continue to grind away on it. I would characterize both negotiations as very cordial and upbeat.

"We're optimistic we'll continue to work toward getting something done."

2:30 p.m. - It was a Sunday swap of cornerbacks for the Dallas Cowboys.

The team parted ways with Gareon Conley after the veteran cornerback notified them of his intent to retire, releasing him and submitting a waiver claim for Kemon Hall, whom the 49ers waived one day prior.

The Cowboys were awarded Hall, who will make his second trip to Dallas after having spent time on the team's practice squad during the 2020 season.

Hall is a former undrafted free agent signing of the Los Angeles Chargers who played in 16 games as a rookie before finding his way back to the Cowboys to replace the camp depth lost by the move on Conley, and also by the fact Trevon Diggs is currently on the PUP list awaiting his return to the field.

----------------------------------

11:58 a.m. - The Cowboys had a scary situation occur in the middle of Sunday's practice as pass-rusher Sam Williams went down with an injury and had to be carted off the field.

Williams was participating in a special teams drill with light contact when he abruptly went to the ground in obvious pain. It appears to be a left knee/leg injury but the Cowboys have yet to provide any further details on the injury.

Williams is entering his third season with the team but was expected to have the biggest role of his career so far as the Cowboys let veteran defensive ends Durance Armstrong and Dante Fowler leave in free agency.

In his career, Williams had 4.0 sacks as a rookie in 2022 and then 4.5 sacks in 2023, despite having zero starts. He was the projected starter heading into camp and the Cowboys are hopeful the injury won't be serious enough to change that.

The Cowboys have an off day on Monday so it's likely Williams will undergo plenty of test, possibly even an MRI over the next two days.

11 a.m. - Trevon Diggs began this year's training camp on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list as he continues to work toward returning to the field from a torn ACL suffered in September 2023.

By all accounts, it doesn't appear it'll be long before the First-Team All-Pro takes the field in Oxnard, but the Cowboys are being extremely deliberate in how they're handling their franchise cornerback.

Just ahead of Day 4 of practice, head coach Mike McCarthy gave an update on Diggs.

"We're in a return to play mode," McCarthy said. "I don't have an exact date. ... We're gonna be smart with him. He looks great and if he were up here, he'd tell you he's ready to go. Caution is [key] here."

9:45 a.m. - The Dallas Cowboys officially released cornerback Gareon Conley on Sunday morning.

The former first-round pick was signed on June 18 after a standout season in the UFL with the DC Defenders. He participated in the first three practices at training camp, but will not look for a new NFL home after notifying the Cowboys of his wish to retire; a decision that led to his release.

This transaction comes after the Cowboys made two additions at the receiver position on Saturday in Kelvin Harmon and Deontay Burnett.

Noon — John Stephens Jr. is "real excited" to get back onto the field after suffering a torn ACL last August that pushed him into a redshirt rookie season, and he's got a bit of a new look physically as he begins his second training camp with the Cowboys.

The talented young tight end added muscle mass to his already lengthy frame this offseason, and it was with the intent of becoming both a better in-line blocker along with the benefits of making it harder for defensive backs to compete with him in press coverage, on breaks and in contested catch situations.

"This offseason, it was definitely one of my main focuses to help with doing something I've never done, [blocking] and putting my hand in the ground," said Stephens. "Me and the nutrition staff did a good job putting more lean mass on. I think it's 12 pounds — last year was 232 [pounds] and this year I came in at about 246.

"... I'm real excited. It's been a long time coming. Going against smaller DBs, it's gonna be a thing, and that's why we made sure it was lean muscle and no bad weight."

4:23 p.m. - If there's a player who can relate to what CeeDee Lamb is going through right now as he's away from the team in a contract holdout, it's Zack Martin. The All-Pro guard sat out nearly three weeks of the 2023 camp before the Cowboys agreed to give him a new contract.

Martin said it was "tough to be away" from his teammates last year and he's confident Lamb is sharing the same sentiments.

But from a positive note, Martin said these opportunities give younger players a chance to shine in camp.

"Yeah, I mean ... a guy like T.J. Bass really benefited from those reps," Martin said of last year's camp. "Brock (Hoffman) really benefitted from those reps. As young guys, reps are what are going to get you in the right position. They took advantage of those reps and obviously we needed some of those guys throughout the year. that was huge for us to build our depth. And the important thing is our offensive line last year took advantage of those reps. I know our receivers will, too."

2:11 p.m. - Micah Parsons has made it clear of his respect for former defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, who is now in Washington.
But not only did Parsons express his excitement on Friday to be in Mike Zimmer's scheme, he knows his relationship with Quinn is a bit different now.

"I think it's still going to be a very good year without Dan," Parsons said. "I was blessed to have Dan for three years. He still checks in on me. I still feel like he's my big Uncle, someone I love dearly. But at the end of the day, I have a job to do and it's to kick his ass twice a year. We can hug afterwards."

Quinn took the head coaching job in Washington, where he also signed many of the Cowboys' free agents, including Dorance Armstrong, Tyler Biadasz and Dante Fowler.

The Cowboys face Washington on the road on Nov. 24 and then close out the regular season at home against the Commanders on either Jan. 4 or Jan. 5.

11:00 a.m. — Most, if not all, of the headlines surrounding the Dallas Cowboys as they open 2024 training camp in Oxnard revolve around the contract negotiations involving Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons, but there's also head coach Mike McCarthy to consider.

McCarthy, now entering his fifth year with the club but without an extension beyond 2024 in hand, has remained focused solely on the task at-hand — ending the Cowboys' Super Bowl drought — but that won't stop questions regarding his status.

Prior to the team's first practice in Oxnard, owner and general manager Jerry Jones spoke about McCarthy's contract status.

"Mike has shown me that he's qualified and he is excellent," said Jones. "He's shown me that he can be our coach for years to come. And he sits next to me in the draft, and I call on him a lot. And if you can't get along with Mike McCarthy, you can't get along."

July 24

12:00 p.m. — After six seasons in Dallas and a brief offseason stint with the Las Vegas Raiders, wide receiver Michael Gallup announced his retirement on Tuesday from the NFL.

The announcement saw a large handful of former teammates and supporters express their congratulations to Gallup on his career, including Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb.
